First Taiwan Born Panda Cub 1 Year Birthday Celebration!

Thousands braved the summer heat Sunday to celebrate the first birthday of Yuan Zai, the first giant panda cub born in Taiwan, who has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors in six months. Around 3,000 people joined a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run which was part of a series of programs marking the birthday.

Visitors, many of them children with parents, cheered Yuan Zai when she was presented with a birthday cake -- made of apples, pineapples, carrots and buns and prepared by the zookeepers.

The main attraction was when the cub grabbed different cards in "Zhua Zhou", a traditional crawling game for one-year-old babies in many Chinese communities. The first card or object to be grabbed indicates a future career path or interest, according to custom. Yuan Zai initially picked up the card for painter, among a variety of others.

The cub made her public debut in January and since then the exhibition centre at Taipei Zoo has often been swamped with fans. In the six months to June 2.4 million people visited the zoo, about a 50 percent rise over the same period of 2013.

Yuan Zai was delivered on July 6 last year following a series of artificial insemination sessions because her parents -- Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan -- failed to conceive naturally. She weighed 180 grams (6.35 ounces) at birth but now tips the scales at around 34 kilograms.

Mother and daughter were reunited for the first time on August 13, a meeting that saw the giant panda licking and cuddling her baby before they fell asleep together inside a cage.

Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, whose names mean "reunion" in Chinese, were given to Taiwan by China in December 2008 and have become star attractions at Taipei Zoo, as well as a symbol of warming ties between the former bitter rivals.

Fewer than 1,600 pandas remain in the wild, mainly in China's Sichuan province, with a further 300 in captivity around the world.

What is the value of a Tree, an Animal, or a Human?

The trees we live among are more than just beautiful... The shade of a tree provides comfort and shelter during a hot summer.

Check out what Professor T.M.Das of the University of Calcutta has to say about trees.

Trees are directly connected to humans and animals. Without trees and other plants; humans (and animals) could not live. This is because humans breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The wood from a tree is essential for human development and planting trees in your neighborhood can be very useful for increasing your home’s value. Tree branches break the cold winter and can actually lower the heating costs. Trees provide food and home for wildlife too.

Trees are worth our effort because in the end we benefit from having more trees.

How much do you think an animal’s life is worth? What is the value of a human life? Hard to quantify but I’m pretty sure it is a lot and no life should be taken for granted no matter how small it is because it plays a role on Earth otherwise it wouldn't exist.

Conclusion: We depend on each other. Anything that inhabits planet Earth: human beings, animals, and plants - are here to contribute, each in its own unique way, to the beauty and prosperity of the world.

Let’s help save planet Earth with hugs, and being Cute and Happy! Let’s make a promise to start today to create real change so that everyone can learn to live in peaceful co-existence with each other, the planet, and all its cute animal friends.

Here’s a great QUOTE FROM BUDDHA:

"Understanding unity helps to solve humanity's biggest challenges. There is no such thing as an isolated problem. By injuring any part of the world's system, you injure yourself. There is no such thing as a win/lose situation. Think of life on this planet in terms of systems and not detached elements. Broaden your field of vision and assimilate the knowledge you have. See that the environment does not belong to any single country to exploit and then disregard. You cannot afford to think of your relationship with the earth as a one-night stand. There's no such thing as a free glass of milk. It's time to buy the cow." –Buddha
